EV Power Systems, Inc. (“EVPS”) designs, sells, and services hybrid and all-electric vehicle power systems. EVPS’ founders apply extensive experience from the automotive and commercial fleet industries to develop innovative, electric-drive system solutions.
Fleet managers, in both private and government organizations, are faced with a combination of strained budgets and need to reduce emissions. Trucks are the bigger problem since trucks consume far more fuel and generate more emissions than passenger cars. Budget constraints prohibit purchase of new trucks. Fleet managers also concerned about any product failures that may affect employees ability to perform tasks.
EVPS has taken proven components, applied in an innovative way, to create an electric-drive system powerful enough to move trucks. This technology can be applied to develop both all-electric and hybrid vehicles. Fleet Manager's Guide
Using this technology, EVPS has developed, tested and is taking orders for a commercial retrofit plug-in hybrid-electric drive system designed for trucks. EVPS retrofits (converts) existing trucks with an affordable, effective, technology-neutral plug-in hybrid-electric drive system that does not require changes to the internal-combustion engine, transmission, vehicle support systems or emissions equipment.

EV Power Systems, Inc. (EVPS) and Energy Dimensions, LLC announced a
partnership today to market EVPS’ plug-in hybrid-electric (PHEV)
retrofit drive system for electric utility light-duty trucks. The
new PHEV systems increases mpg by 30% with an ROI of approximately
30% at current fuel prices in start/stop applications.
EVPS joined Clemson University and 11 cities in 5 states -- New York, New Jersey, South Carolina, Florida and California -- in submitting a proposal to US Department of Energy as part of DOE-FOA-0000028. The proposal would help fund converting 140 trucks -- pick-ups, shuttle buses and refuse trucks -- to hybrid-electric using EVPS patented system. DOE announced awards for FOE-0000028 08/05/09. We did not win. Observations and list of winners.
We decided to keep an excerpt from the submission on the website because we thought it important to display the breadth of interest among local governments in converting existing fleets to hybrids. Virtually all Federal government support focuses on funding technology for development of new vehicles and little on technology for converting the 100,000,000 trucks in operation.
While we certainly understand the need to rebuild manufacturing capacity and the need for a healthy domestic auto industry, not supporting retrofitting existing fleet trucks ignores (i) an immediate and permanent way to reduce fuel consumption and emissions (ii) an immediate opportunity to increase jobs (iii) a low-cost and credible approach to field test technology that may be appropriate for new vehicles. We are hopeful that DOE, EPA and other Federal agencies will rethink the benefits of retrofits and provide more support in the future.
